Menomena – Mines

[Heavy Rotation]

I would grab your headphones now.

Sound engineers and producers make music for earbuds now. Good or Bad – it is what it is.  As of April 2010,  260,000,000 iPods have been sold worldwide, which means 520,000,000 little tiny shitty speakers were sold as a well.   (David Byrne made a very interesting presentation on TED.com about the evolution of music based on Architecture and how the new arena is a portable experience for extremly intimate and detailed music -if you have the time, it’s worth watching).  Now, what kind of effect do numbers like that have on the musical landscape considering the main arena is so vastly isolated?  Something quite opposite of vast.  Microscopic is more like it.

Menomena – makes very big, moving, complex, loud, intelligent, and masterfully orchestrated microscopic music.  Listening to Menomena is an engaging experience but it might require a bit of patience.  You might not even enjoy this at all and easily dismiss it, that’s fine, but if you take the time to pry open this tiny world your mind just might explode from all the details.

Best Coast – I Want To

[staring at the sun]

The Sun is relentlessly crushing it this year with a smile on her face and there’s no sign of her backing down any time soon.

Best Coast knows how to respect the heat with some great summertime sounds.  Cool off with this and then gitchyo ass back outside people.  After all, how many Summers do you have left?

Beat The Devil

[rub some Dirt on it]

Today is one of those black dog days.  That shadow can creep close up on ya if yer not minding the store.  Carry that stick boy, carry that stick…

Shilpa Ray is a god.  Now that Beat The Devil is deceased, she goes by Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers.  But don’t fool yourself, She came straight outa Jim Morrison and Glenn Danzig’s womb.  Dark, Broody, Ritualistic, Powerful, Sweaty, Angry, Evil, Sexy.  She’s a nomadic storm cloud bringing the next flood.  If you ever get a chance to see her live, run and get up close enough to see her sweat while she plays her harmonium.  She labors life into that beast by pumping it through the entire show and I believe that’s the source of her power.  It’s like she’s priming her soul pump after pump after pump after pump…She burns.
